Between Design and Architecture
Between Design and Architecture

Between Design and Architecture is a post degree course treating buildings as assemblages of designed components. In response to social, economic and environmental change the course seeks to understand and elaborate on the role of design within construction of buildings. It suggests an open approach to architecture as a broad and diverse field of design in which the foundational relationship between producer and user is rethought, remodeled and prototyped. The first edition of the course, The Settlement, was structured around a former fish factory in the small community of Hjalteyri, Iceland. As a result of decimated local industry and increased tourism the factory recently reopened as an art space. Treating the 1937 concrete hulk as a commodity (or cave) rather than a building we look at how design through related knowledge, craft and technology can adapt and transform spaces into new usages.
